The Burns Supper is an institution of Scottish life and is celebrated by Scottish communities around the world.Robert (known as „Rabbie“) Burns, Scotland's national Bard (poet), was born on 25th January 1759. Burns Night is held on or near to this date and is a celebration of his life and works. The first Burns Night was held by the poet's friends a couple of years after his death in 1796.
A Piper welcomes the guests as they arrive and then the „piping in of the haggis“ and the famous Burns poem „ Address to the Haggis“ is the most dramatic part of the evening.
Originally these events were men only and consisted of serious eating and drinking of traditional Scottish food and Scotch whisky** and the recitation of Rabbie's poems.
In later years, dancing was added „if ladies are present“!
Rabbie loved a good party and these events are true to his memory...perhaps with a bit more dancing and considerably less of the poetry!
** „Scottish“ is the adjective used to describe everything to do with Scotland. The word „Scotch“ is exclusively used for whisky. Indeed, it is not even necessary these days to use the work whisky at all; Scotch on its own is enough!
