Rim, sredina 1940-ih. Delia je kućanica koja brine o suprugu Ivanu, njihovo troje djece i svekru Ottorinu, a uz to obavlja sitne honorarne poslove. Ivano je pak neprikosnoveni gospodar obitelji koji zarađuje jedva dovoljno za osigurati krov nad glavom, no ima potrebu stalno podsjećati tko je hranitelj obitelji, ponekad ružnim riječima, a nekad uz pomoć remena. Delija obiteljsku situaciju pokorno prihvaća pokušavajući djeci osigurati što bolji život, a najveća joj je želja udaja kćerke Marcelle za dobrog i plemenitog supruga. Međutim, kada jednoga dana primi misteriozno pismo, počinje kovati neke nove planove.
