Neuspješni izumitelj Randell Peltzer u starinarnici u kineskoj četvrti kupi neobično maleno krzneno biće nazvano mogwai, kao božićni poklon za svog sina Billyja. Prodavatelj ga upozori da se mora strogo pridržavati triju pravila: mogwaija se ne smije izlagati svjetlosti, posebno ne sunčanoj, jer bi ga to ubilo; ne smije doći u dodir s vodom i, najvažnije, ne smije ga se hraniti nakon ponoći.

Randell simpatičnom stvorenju da ime Gizmo i upozna Billyja s tri pravila, međutim Billyjev mlađi prijatelj Pete nehotice Gizma poprska vodom, te iz njegovih leđa izađe pet novih mogwaija, no karakterom sasvim različitih od njega. Dok je Gizmo slatki dobrica, petorica predvođena agresivnim Stripeom opasne su kreature koje će ne samo Billyju i njegovoj obitelji i prijateljima, nego i cijelom gradu praznične dane pretvoriti u kaos…
